Super Reefs Documentary
Client: National Geographic
Role: Art Direction, Design, Storyboard
This captivating documentary follows a group of marine scientists on a return trip to the southern Line Islands of Kiribati in the central Pacific. A renowned explorer and conservationist, Enric Sala, and the Pristine Seas team witness firsthand the resilience of coral reefs and the incredible biodiversity they support.
Super Reefs premiered on Earth Day, April 2024, on the National Geographic Channel in the United States and launched to audiences worldwide on Video on Demand/Hulu.
A cut-down reel offers a glimpse into some design and animation from a much larger documentary production.
I led and collaborated with a talented team of motion designers to craft a compelling design and animation package, including dynamic maps, text assets, and fluid animations that illustrate the biology of coral reefs and their remarkable resilience.
Inspired by the appearance of Millennium Island, a breathtaking atoll in Kiribati, we created stylized hand-drawn illustrations using organic strokes and watercolor textures. Paradise Blue, Green, and warm sand form the primary color scheme, evoking a serene and awe-inspiring tone for the animation.
